Abstract
In the past, it has often been impossible or impractical to precode open-ended questions in surveys. This paper describes some experimental work at the National Opinion Research Center on the use of computers in coding natural-language responses in surveys, using a modification of the General Inquirer system developed at Harvard. Keywords
