Abstract
Each year over a million children in the United States are involved in the break-up of their families by divorce. Most of them are left to deal with the stress produced by the family trauma on their own. Children need someone to respond to them when their parents are divorcing. This article proposes that psychologists assume an active role as child advocates with divorcing families to reduce the stress for the children. It describes ways in which psychologists can intervene indirectly with significant adults in the children's lives, and directly with the children. individually and in groups; psychologists are urged to be creative in developing services for children of divorce, in school, community mental health center, and private practice settings. Keywords
