Abstract
Li prophylactic effect against depression was assessed in unipolar (43), bipolar II (102), and cyclothymic (69) patients by using a longitudinal life-table analysis and the probability of remaining free of a depressive episode was calculated. The probability of remaining free of 1 depressive episode after 2 yr of taking Li ranged from 42-55% for the bipolar II patients, 31-42% for the unipolar patients, and 26-36% for the cyclothymic patients. The average probability of suffering 1 depressive episode severe enough to require either pharmacologic intervention or hospitalization in a 2 yr period was 51% for the bipolar II patients, 64% for the unipolar patients, and 69% for the cyclothymic patients. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
