Weak ripple turbulence prevails

Abstract
Weak turbulence is distinguished from strong turbulence by the presence of small-amplitude waves making a theoretical treatment in terms of perturbation theory feasible. A prime example is the formation of waves on the surface of an ideal incompressible and deep fluid. We present measurements of the surface-height-frequency spectrum for capillary ripples, using the diffusing light technique developed by Wright et al.. The scaling behavior and cross-over phenomenon we observe provide direct support to the weak turbulence theory of surface waves.
