Abstract
The requirements for a Local Area Network (LAN) suitable for use in factory environments are discussed. In many cases these requirements are met by fiber optic Ethernet (IEEE 802.3 compatible) LANs. Implementation of a passive fiber optic star coupler based Ethernet LAN is presented in terms of hardware and system design rules. Application of the passive star coupler topology LAN to a number of factory applications is described.© (1987) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
