The Condition and Needs of Systematic Mycology

Abstract
The great practical economic, as well as scientific, importance of mycology is pointed out. The present condition is unsatisfactory, on account of the vast number of imperfectly described fungi, and the great difficulties involved in their taxonomy. The polymorphism, pleomorphism and physiological variations which are common require long and thorough investigation to secure necessary information upon which to base a natural classification. Much of the present taxonomic work is very superficial and inaccurate, leading to greater confusion rather than to the progress of knowledge. The needs mentioned are a more thorough study of the known species from every standpoint to determine more exactly the variations and group limitations and their relationships. A system of nomenclature which will be reasonably uniform and stable is very essential. The following of general usage instead of priority of publication is proposed as a means of attaining this end.
