Catheter Placement in Infants Needing Total Parenteral Nutrition Utilizing Common Facial Vein

Abstract
A technique of catheter insertion for infants needing long-term parenteral nutrition utilizing the common facial vein is described. Utilization of the common facial vein rather than the internal jugular vein obviates the necessity to ligate the internal jugular vein, yet allows placement of the catheter in to a central venous location. Insertion of the catheter into the jugular vein via the common facial vein allows advancement of the catheter without obstruction which is often encountered when using the external jugular vein. The infant Pudenz catheter with its one way valve feature was used. This catheter prevents reflux of blood while the infant is crying. It also prevents attendants from withdrawing blood specimen by this route which is not recommended.
