Abstract
New saponins, named gypenosides LVI (1), LVII (2), LVIII (3), LIX (4) and LX (5) besides the known gypenosides V (11), IX (12), XLIII (13), XLV (14) and ginsenoside-Rb3 (15) were isolated from the aerial parts of Gynostemma pentaphyllum MAKINO collected in Miyagi Pref. On the basis of chemical and physicochemical evidence, they were characterized as follows: 1, 2.alpha.,3.beta.,12.beta.,20(S)-tetrahydroxydammar-24-ene 3-O-.beta.-sophoroside-20-O-.beta.-primeveroside: 2, 2.alpha.,3.beta.,12.beta., 20(S)-tetrahydroxydammar-24-ene 3-O-.beta.-D-glucopyranoside-20-O-.beta.-primeveroside: 3, 3.beta.,12.beta.,20(S)-trihydroxydammar-24-ene 3-O-[.beta.-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 .fwdarw. 2)-.alpha.-L-arabinopyranoside]-20-O-.beta.-primeveroside; 4, 2.alpha.,3.beta.,12.beta.,20(S), 26-pentahydroxydammar-24-ene 20-O-.beta.-primeveroside: 5, 2.alpha.,3.beta.,12.beta.,20(S), 25-pentahydroxydammar-23-ene 20-O-.beta.-primeveroside.Keywords
