The Detection of Antinuclear Antibodies in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus by Discontinuous Counterimmunoelectrophoresis (DCIE)

Abstract
Coded sera from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and those with other diseases were tested by discontinuous counterimmunoelectrophoresis (DCIE) for the presence of antibodies against deoxyribonucleoprotein (DNP). Of the 35 sera from SLE patients, 28 gave strong positive precipitin bands and seven yielded weak bands. Of 70 sera from patients not diagnosed as having SLE, none gave a strong positive reaction, but 20 showed weak positive reactions. The test is rapid and simple, and can be an aid in the diagnosis of SLE.
