Abstract
This chapter reviews recent census data on the new second generation and its principal patterns of settlement and adaptation. It documents the demographic and economic characteristics of the first, second, and third and higher generations as a whole. The chapter contextualizes each individual analysis and captures the circumstances of these groups relative to one another. It provides statistical profiles for the country-of-origin groups that are the focus of the chapters to follow, and for selected additional groups which have significant immigration streams. The chapter notes that these profiles describe individuals according to place of residence, demographic characteristics, headship structure, poverty and income packaging, education and labor-force outcomes, and health status and health-insurance coverage.
