Abstract
Phoca groenlandica and Cystophora cristata are hunted, the former usually making up about 9/10 of the total catch. At the present time they appear to be maintaining themselves in the face of hunting although fewer are being caught since 1917. The total annual catch has varied from 1059 seals in 1864, to 353,276 seals in 1900 and was 183,689 in 1936. The average per hunter has varied from 3.4 in 1864 to 157 in 1933 when 1122 hunters were engaged. At present hunting appears to be self-regulating, fewer ships and men being engaged when the average catch falls off. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
