Abstract
A comprehensive review of the literature on phagocytosis covering the reported literature pertinent to methods of study, mechanisms of operation, and modification by physical, chemical and miscellaneous factors in both human and animal infections. Conflicting evidence is critically analyzed and discussed, and points needing additional clarification and investigation are suggested. The role of leucocytes and the reticulo-endothelial systems in phagocytic processes are separately evaluated, and the importance of the phagocyte in modifying disease processes is presented. 322 references. Keywords
