Abstract
The efficiency of 4 synthetic and several natural waters as diluents in bacteriological examinations was determined, using samples from 7 widely separated sources. Distilled water buffered with Na and K phosphates at pH 7.2 is recommended as suitable and easily prepared. Distilled water and waters with a pH of 9.0 or over were bactericidal. The pH and mineral-salt content appeared to be the important factors. Tests to determine the suitability of dilution waters should be made after sterilization; waters frequently change during sterilization and material dissolved from the glass of poor-quality glass containers may alter the water markedly.
