PROLAPSE OF THE GASTROSTOMY CATHETER IN CHILDREN

Abstract
An important complication of gastrostomy is prolapse of the catheter in the antrum of the stomach, or in the duodenum. The prolapse usually causes gastric obstruction or bleeding, diarrhea after tube feeding, and other symptoms. The symptoms subside promptly in most cases following repositioning of the catheter. Nine new instances in children are reported. A complication of the prolapse not previously emphasized is marked swelling of the antrum which improves slowly following repositioning of the catheter. One of the infants developed hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.
