Abstract
During body surface surgery anaesthesia with thiopentone, nitrous oxide-oxygen was accompanied by a small rise in blood sugar whereas when propanidid was substituted for thiopentone there was a much larger rise. A single intravenous dose of both agents in the absence of surgery induced no hyperglycaemia and it is considered that the response is probably related to the stress of surgery and the differing abilities of the two agents to obtund the response. Keywords
