Abstract
The allocation of freight cars is addressed. On the basis of the observation that the problem involves strategic knowledge much more than linear programming (in that distributors currently use reasoning to find solutions), an allocation system centered on an expert system that reproduces distributors' reasoning was developed. The system is described, and operations research and expert system approaches are compared. Organizational problems that operationally impeded the implementation of the system are discussed. Keywords
