Abstract
AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION Labyrinthine nystagmus both in clinical practice and in discussions of experimental results is designated in accordance with the quick movement. This is an anomaly, since it reduces to a position of secondary importance the most essential factor in the phenomenon — the cause of the deviation of the eyes, from the primary position of equilibrium1 or from the primary position of the line of fixation of Listing. It must not be forgotten that the eyes of normal subjects have a definite position when at rest or during fixation. Any involuntary departure from this position means that some unusual influence is operative to cause the deviation, and it is precisely this deviation and influence that the clinician is called on to explain.
