Abstract
A series of experiments on the elastic behavior of various textile materials was carried out. All results are described with the aid of a mechanical model. For this purpose it is necessary to introduce the possibility of a blockade of a part of the model. The elastic properties are characterized by the values of seven independent fundamental constants of the model. The value of one of these constants associated with the blockade can be determined experimentally in a direct way; it is found to be independent of the moisture content. The most important properties of the model correspond with the molecular image of Hermans.
