Abstract
In some areas 1-hydroxypyrido-(3,2a)-5-phenoxazone-3-carboxylic acid (Catalin®) is used therapeutically in the treatment of cataract. Previous studies have shown that the compound interacts with carbohydrate metabolism; during these investigations, the possibility occurred that Catalin might effect the enzymatic determination with questionable results. The present studies show that Catalin reacts with reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). NADH is the parameter of the enzymatic determination. Another study shows the direction and the extent to which the specific tests for adenine nucleotides, intermediates of glycolysis and enzyme activities in bovine lenses, are influenced by Catalin. Keywords
