Abstract
Of 648 consecutive hospital patients with carcinoma of the prostate, 39(6%) had previously had a prostatectomy with the diagnosis of hyperplasia. In another 63 (9.5%), who had prostatectomies with definite preoperative diagnoses of benign hyperplasia, cancer was found in the surgical specimens. Since carcinoma may develop in portions of the prostate not removed by subtotal prostatectomy, and because many are missed on clinical examination, the authors advocate total prostatectomy in selected cases of benign hypertrophy. Keywords
