Abstract
It is my purpose in this communication to present some observations on the subject of fractures of the os calcis, and especially on their treatment by the operation of subastragalar arthrodesis, together with a report of the end-results in twenty-six cases that have been treated by this method. I am indebted to the staff of the fracture service of the Massachusetts General Hospital for the privilege of a special assignment which has provided the opportunity for the study of these cases. It is first necessary to stress the severe disabling character of this injury, a feature still unappreciated by many physicians. It is doubtful whether there is any other fracture of the bones of the leg which is so nearly universally crippling in its results as fracture of the os calcis.
