Abstract
I wish to report a case of acute anaphylaxis that occurred in a 43-year-old female nurse after she ate a new Kellogg's cereal, Heartwise, for the first time. Shortly after the ingestion of Heartwise, which contains psyllium-seed husks, she had generalized itching, swelling of the face, eyes, mouth, and tongue, coughing, vomiting, and syncope. She was treated at the emergency room of a local hospital with epinephrine and diphenhydramine and was discharged on oral medications after four hours. The patient reported no allergies and in her work as a nurse had prepared psyllium laxatives without any adverse reaction. Skin testing with psyllium was strongly positive and also caused some itching and redness of her face and eyes. Other nurses and several persons who were not nurses had negative skin tests with psyllium. Keywords
