Abstract
The method of images is shown to be applicable in discussing the elastic field of twist disclinations in nonhomogeneous media. The interaction energies of disclination loops near a phase boundary have been obtained and it is found that the sum of self-energy and interaction energy is a continuous function of loop locations across a phase boundary. Furthermore, the image force on a twist disclination always acts in such a direction as to push the loop away from the more rigid phase. The implications of these findings apply not only to the behavior of grain boundaries of polyphase materials but also to macromolecular solids. This publication has 16 references indexed in Scilit:
