Secondary reinforcement in children as a function of conditioning associations and extinction percentages.

Abstract
Sixty-four preschool children were conditioned and extinguished in a free operant situation. Extinction responses resulted in the presentation of a light on either 20% or 100% of the trials. For 2 groups the light was paired with reward only during conditioning (PAS); for the other 2 groups the light occurred on every trial during conditioning, both rewarded and nonrewarded (MAS). For both PAS and MAS conditions, 100% presentation of the light resulted in more extinction responses. The PAS procedure produced slightly more responses than the MAS procedure.
