Sample introduction device for use with a microwave-induced plasma

Abstract
A miniature unit, based on a heated wire filament, has been devised in order to introduce samples into an atmospheric pressure microwave-induced plasma (MIP). The design is such that the dead space has been eliminated and turbulence of the plasma gas is kept to a minimum. The walls of the unit are self-heated and thus plating-out of the sample is not a problem. The unit may be opened to the atmosphere, the liquid sample injected, volatilised and re-injected immediately without extinguishing the plasma. The device is inexpensive, easy to operate and maintain and provides a means for fast, reliable analyses of those elements excited by an MIP.
