Abstract
Stomach contents were examined from 9 spp. of cyprinid fishes from the White River at Petersburg, Indiana [USA]. Species feeding on ooze all seasons were the silvery minnow (Hybognathus nuchalis Agassiz) and the bluntnose minnow [Pimephales notatus (Rafinesque)]. In summer, the emerald shiner (Notropis atherinoides Rafinesque) fed heavily on chironomid and trichopteran pupae; the river shiner [N. blennius (Girard)] and the spotfin shiner [N. spilopterus (Cope)] on chironomid larvae; the steelcolor shiner [N. whipplei (Girard)] on trichopteran larvae; and the bullhead minnow [P. vigilax (Baird and Girard)] on ooze and chironomid and trichopteran larvae. In autumn, N. atherinoides fed most heavily on chironomid pupae and ants; the other species on ooze. In winter, all these species and also the sand shiner [N. stramineus (Cope)] fed largely on seeds. Chironomid larvae and trichopteran larvae were the major foods of the suckermouth minnow [Phenacobius mirabilis (Girard)].
