Abstract
The myofibrils of cells from the upper thigh muscle of a 3 to 7 months old calf embryo contract violently when whole serum and complement are added to the cells after 8 to 12 days cultivation in vitro. The cause of the phenomenon is not clear. It is not impossible that a sudden reduction of the adenosine triphosphate of the cells through an antigen-antibody reaction occurred resulting in the contraction of the cell. The possibility that the loss of K-ions from the cell and the entry of Na-ions by the immune cytolysis plays a role in the contraction process under the conditions of the experiment cannot be excluded.
