Basal Cell Carcinoma Arising in a Chickenpox Scar

Abstract
A basal cell carcinoma developed in a chickenpox scar on the chin of a 71-year-old man. A review of the pertinent literature is presented. Report of a Case A 71-year-old man was seen for a recently developed nonhealing lesion in an old scar on the right side of his chin. According to the patient the scar had developed after he had had chickenpox as a small boy. Over the past several months the area began to sting and burn and had not healed after he had nicked it with a razor. The patient had had a smallpox vaccination as a child, but had noticed no changes in the vaccination scar. He had had no exposure to radiation and no previous skin cancers despite a history of frequent sun exposure over the years. There was no family history of skin cancer.
