Abstract
The Gordon conjecture that the mean-square fluctuations in correlation functions follow a local equilibrium rule, is shown to hold true for the simple case of an oscillator coupled linearly to its surroundings. It is suggested that the method of solution, which involves projection-operator techniques, may be applicable to the multitime correlation functions which are needed to describe nonlinear response. Keywords
