Public Support for Age as an Eligibility Criterion for Programs for Older Persons

Abstract
Although many contend that social programs for older persons enjoy a high degree of public support, little empirical work bears on this issue. This study examines the extent to which a general population accepts the use of old age as a criterion for receiving tax supported services and benefits. It also attempts to identify the characteristics of individuals most likely to support age as a criterion and to support programs for which attainment of a specific chronological age is the sole eligibility criterion.
