A Mathematical Model of a Pelican Crossing

Abstract
A simple mathematical model is set up to describe the mode of operation of a Pelican crossing. The distributions of times during which vehicles may and may not pass through the crossing are established, and the queues of pedestrians and vehicles which form are investigated. A limited amount of data has been collected to estimate the numerical values of the parameters of the model and to check on the validity of the assumptions made. It is hoped at a later stage to report on similar investigations at other types of pedestrian crossings, and to compare their effectiveness with Pelican crossings.
