Melting Properties of Silver Nitrate to 10 000 Atm

Abstract
The effects of pressure on the volume of fusion and the melting point of silver nitrate have been determined up to 10 000 atm. The extrapolated value for the volume of fusion at zero pressure is 2.58 cc/mole, as compared to the literature value of 0.3 cc/mole. On the basis of the Clausius—Clapeyron equation, a value of 2.54 cc/mole was calculated for the volume of fusion from the limiting slope of the melting curve at zero pressure and the calorimetric value for the heat of fusion. The effect of increasing the pressure to 10 000 atm is to reduce the volume of fusion by 30% and to slightly increase the heat of fusion.Keywords
