Abstract
The use of freshly drawn blood for transfusion should be justified by the clinical and laboratory findings manifested by the patient in relation to the known effects of storage on blood. Empirical administration of this product is wasteful, for it depletes the available donor pool and interfers with blood-bank inventory. A review of a variety of clinical situations that frequently occasion requests for freshly drawn blood indicates that most can be treated optimally with specific blood components, relatively fresh blood, or, in some instances, blood of any storage age. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
