Abstract
The precipitation potential of platelets from plasma-containing ACD solution was measured. This was found to be in the same range as that for anticoagulant-free human and canine erythrocytes and leukocytes (VH = +0. 4 volts at pH 7. 4), and less positive for erythrocytes and leukocytes drawn into acid citrate dextrose solution (ACD) (VH = +0.175 volts). The precipitation of platelets in ACD on the platinum electrode in contrast to findings with erythrocytes and leukocytes is found to be an irreversible phenomenon. Deposited platelets visibly degenerate, followed by rapid conversion of the solution from sol to a gel (in recalcified citrate-containing solution). Heparin prevents gel formation except at the lowest concentrations used. An electrochemical hypothesis for the induction of intravascular thrombosis is presented. Keywords
