Back Blows and Choking

Abstract
To the Editor.— The special commentary by Heiemlich on first aid for choking children1 is filled with inaccuracies, is a gross distortion of real issues, and cannot go unanswered by the American Heart Association (AHA). It was most appropriate to publish Day's scientific article on choking.2 It is studies such as this that assist the AHA is making recommendations for standards and guidelines in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for the professional and lay communities. Contrary to Heimlich's statements, back blows are not death blows! Medical literature contains articles regarding their successful application,3 and there are literally hundreds of successful anecdotal cases.4
