Abstract
New micromorphological attributes taken from the base of the florets, the lodicules, and epiblasts are shown to be very useful in delimiting the two related taxa A. septentrionalis Malz. and A. fatua. It is pointed out that more research, such as cytogenetics and genetics, is needed to understand better the relationships between these two taxa; this might also be beneficial for breeding oats, especially in view of the fact that no material from this taxon has been used so far.The semispecies concept is here applied and discussed. In this approach the semispecies expresses a state of relationship between two or more closely related species rather than a nomenclaturo-taxonomic category.
