DIFFERENCES IN PERCENTAGE OF NON-RETURNS TO SERVICE BETWEEN TRANSFERRIN TYPES OF BULLS

Abstract
Survival of zygotes is affected by transferrin mating types in cattle as indicated by significant differences in percentage of non-returns to service among bulls of the different types. The effect is evident in an early stage of prenatal life but with the data available the possible effect on later stages could not be studied. Any practical advantages in increasing rate of reproduction by utilizing knowledge of the types of mates must await a more detailed study of the actual survival pattern over all mating types. It is evident from the present data that unlike mates have a reproductive advantage and that the relative reproductive advantages within a population are associated with the transferrin gene frequency.
