Abstract
Cancellate walls of several fossil species are compared and homologized with the spiny, honeycombed wall of modern Globigerinoides. Spiny, honeycomb wall texture is primitive, dating back at least to Late Oligocene, and was much more widespread among planktonic foraminifera in the past than it is today. Several moderan types of walls appear to have been derived from this primitive texture. A new genus, PARAGLOBOROTALIA [type species: Globorotalia opima opima Bolli, 1957], is proposed.
