Abstract
The data fits of microscopic nuclear mass formulas can be considerably improved by making the pairing force slightly stronger for an odd number of like nucleons than for an even number. Qualitatively at least, such an effect could arise from the fact that the Hartree-Fock wave function of an odd nucleus is not an eigenstate of the time-reversal operator. Keywords
