Effects of Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding on Solute Retention in Reversed-Phase Liquid Chromatography. Elution Characteristics of Some Isomeric Benzamides

Abstract
The reversed-phase liquid chromatographic elution properties of some isomeric benzamides are reported. The ortho isomer for each series of compounds displays retention properties dissimilar to its meta and para counterparts. Enhanced chromatographic retention occurs in those ortho-substituted benzamides capable of forming an intramolecular hydrogen bond. For those substituents incapable of internal hydrogen-bond formation the ortho isomer displays reduced retention relative to the meta and para isomers.
