Abstract
The New York Citizens' Statewide Lake Assessment Program is a cooperative effort between the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and the New York Federation of Lake Associations, Inc. In this program citizen volunteers from lake associations throughout the state monitor the water quality in their lakes. Water samples and lake observations are collected at a single designated site and depth, as outlined in a sampling protocol manual and in training sessions conducted by professional staff. Samples are taken on a weekly basis for 15 weeks from June through September. Water samples are collected from the deepest water column in each lake, and analyzed by the New York State Department of Health in Albany. Results from this study will be used to construct a data base from which the Department of Environmental Conservation hopes to devise and implement a management strategy for each lake. Keywords
