Why Nursing Homes Do What They Do

Abstract
Rating scales, tests, and an observation-based measure of actual nursing home behavior showed that among 1144 residents, half needed little assistance with activities of daily living and half were mentally alert. More than half of the residents' time was spent doing nothing and most of the rest in personal care or socializing. Little nursing care was observed. Highest quality care was noted among residents who were white, lived in nonprofit and private pay homes, and who had visitors, personal possessions, and jobs around the nursing home.
