Abstract
Normal measurements with the probe 6 inches below soil surface were inaccurate and unacceptable. Measurements taken after placement of a polyethylene shield oh the surface were acceptably accurate. Calibration technique involved "true" readings at depth, then excavation of soil to 6 inches above measurement points and final "surface" readings. For shallower depths, the relationship between readings with and without shield is considered a useful indication of moisture content.
