Abstract
A brief review is given of the mechanism of welding and the three basic groups of welding processes so far recognized. The recently developed process of friction welding, which is essentially a solid-phase welding process, is discussed and some of the fundamental aspects of friction and the metallurgy of the welds produced are examined. The application of this process to engineering problems end examples of the machines developed for friction welding are briefly mentioned.
