Abstract
Cavernous transformation of the portal vein is a rare disease in the adult. We report a case of a 60-year-old woman with a large carcinoma of the body of the pancreas, who underwent a curative resection (radical distal pancreatectomy). Preoperative radiographic examination revealed cavernous transformation of the portal vein, not caused by direct tumor invasion. At surgery, there was no tumor invasion of the portal vein. The lumen of the splenic vein was replaced by a thrombus. Mucin from the tumor was suspected to play a role in thrombosis. Precise preoperative radiologic examination is essential for determining the resectability of pancreatic cancer. Keywords
