Abstract
This paper is concerned with the total heat transfer by simultaneous conduction and radiation through a packed bed of microspheres. The porous medium is considered to be continuous having effective thermophysical properties such as conductance, scattering and absorption parameters. The analysis involves the solution of the two-flux equations together with the thermophysical properties and the energy equation for simultaneous conduction and radiation. The solution is then used to predict the thermal effectiveness of microsphere insulation. For various system parameters and particle properties, the predictions compare favorably with measured values. Keywords
