Abstract
The concept of merostabilisation, the stabilisation of free radicals by simultaneous conjugation with electron donor and acceptor groups, is developed by valence bond, MO, and Linnett double quartet theories. The concept is used to rationalise the stabilities of known radicals, and to predict those of new ones, some of which have been synthesised. Keywords
