A Survey of Hemagglutinins in Various Seeds

Abstract
Summary: Saline extracts of 2663 varieties of plant and vegetable seeds were tested for human blood group activity. Of these, 1635 were inactive, 711 were nonspecific, 227 hemolyzed red cells of all groups and 90 were specific. Twenty-nine of the 90 specific extracts possessed anti-M and anti-N activity. A new lectin with anti-M specificity derived from the seeds of Iberis amara was discovered. This is the first example of anti-M lectin from a plant source and the first lectin found in this species and family. The remaining 61 specific extracts either had been previously reported or were too weak to be of value.
