Abstract
Zigzagging disclination lines have been observed in uniaxial nematics (4-methoxybenzylidene-4'n-butylaniline and n-hexyloxy-4' phenyl n-decyloxy-4 benzoate), which very much resemble the zigzags already studied in the biaxial nematics. They, however, originate from a different mechanism. It results a different temperature behaviour of the angle of the disclination zigzags in the uniaxial and the biaxial nematics, which leads to a rather simple criterion for the biaxiality of the nematic phasesKeywords
