Abstract
The relationship between the consumption of antimicrobial agents and the emergence of resistance in bacteria is complex. However, there is clear-cut evidence that the therapeutic and prophylactic use of antimicrobials is associated with the emergence of resistance in the individual patient, in the hospital setting, and in the worldwide community as a whole.
